Lehrstuhl Pflanzenökologie - Bayreuth
Plant biophysics is studied. The focus is on water relations and on the regulation of water flow in plants. To work out the basic mechanisms that govern water flow, we measure transport at the level of individual cells including the molecular level, tissues and organs, and at the level of entire plants. Most of the concepts used for a quantitative analysis of transport are derived from irreversible thermodynamics. They provide appropriate and useful tools to also integrate couplings between flows of water and nutrients as they move across a complex structure such as a plant. Results are summarized in physical and mathematical models which are tested experimentally. At the cell level, we are interested in the function (permeability, selectivity) of water channels (aquaporins) which provide most of the water flow across the membranes of living cells.

A structure with three working groups has proofed to foster the research needs. In the last ten years the scope of the Department of Meteorology at the Dresden University of Technology was considerable enlarged, remote sensing and boundary layer modeling became additional important research areas. Nevertheless, research and teaching remain equally important tasks of all members of the department.

Foundation In order to pursue the industrial production of insect-pathogenic nematodes, e~nema GmbH was founded in early 1997. The three shareholders, Dr. Ralf-Udo Ehlers, Tillmann Frank and Dr. Arne Peters could then lease the pilot plant from the University of Kiel. Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig - Bonn
The Zoologisches Forschungsinstitut und Museum Alexander Koenig (ZFMK) is one of the major natural history research museums in the Federal Republic of Germany. The museum has earned its reputation as a leading institution in this field through the docomentation, investigation, and explanation of species richness (biodiversity). The significant scientific collections, which concentrate on vertebrates and insects in terrestrial habitats, constitute the museum's 'heart'. These collections represent the foundation of the manifold research themes dealt with here. The permanent exhibition also shows parts of these rich holdings.
